When the weather allowed, the Soldier's time was taken by regimented drill and training. He awoke early with reveille and mustered for the first roll call of the day. On the coldest of nights, Soldiers slept two or three to a bunk to take advantage of shared blankets and body heat.Ī Soldier's living quarters was the center of his daily life. Most troopers placed the rubber blanket directly on their bunk for protection from drafts coming from underneath, and then covered themselves with the heavy woolen one. Whether they slept in their boots or not, each Soldier was issued a rubber blanket and a woolen blanket. When bed-time rolled around, most Soldiers stripped to their flannel underwear before climbing into the bunk, while others stayed completely dressed, never removing clothing for months at a time. Bunks were constructed of saplings, boxes and crates, and hay or leaves for a sleeping surface. The interior walls of the cabins supported bunks and furniture made from whatever materials the men managed to gather. If a nearby town was available and glass or oiled paper could be obtained, fortunate Soldiers would have the luxury of windows. Whatever the building style, Soldiers spent long hours chinking between the logs with mud or mortar to keep out cold drafts and to conserve heat from the fire place. For example, Soldiers of Scandinavian descent generally built their cabins with the logs vertical, while those of German descent built with the logs horizontal with notches at the corner to minimize the use of nails. Interestingly, the style of cabin sometimes pointed to the ancestry of the builders. Soldiers cut logs from the surrounding country side, built their cabins next to brick and mortar chimneys, and roofed the buildings with tent canvas. Some structures were no more than a hole dug into the earth with a tent over top, while others were multi-man cabins complete with fireplace, chimney, and bunks. Each building style was different as well. Others were haphazard arrangements of tents, cabins, and cabins with tent roofs. Some camps were orderly, with cabins or tents lined in neat rows with each building the same as the one before it. Life in a winter camp was by no means easy rather, it was an extension of the hardships of being a Soldier during the American Civil War.Įach winter camp was different. During the lull in marching and fighting during the winter months, Soldiers built full-fledged log cabins to keep snug against the cold. Camps were both long-term and short, and could be as simple as half-shelters of canvas in a field a few miles from the battlefield. While battles and marches were part of the Civil War Soldiering experience, the majority of a Soldier's life was spent in a camp. Soldiers marched for days and weeks at a time to reach battlefields, carrying their entire lives on their backs or in following wagon trains. The American Civil War was a long, bloody conflict punctuated by horrific pitched battles. The fourth is an example of a cabin an officer might have lived in. The middle two cabins represent enlisted men's barracks. When facing the cabins, the furthest left represents a cook's house, where a unit's food was cooked and served. The cabins are modeled after images from the USAHEC collection, including the Army of the Potomac's winter camp at Brandy Station and the Confederate camp at Centerville. The four log cabins at the center of the Army Heritage Trail represent the types of buildings which Soldiers in both the Union and the Confederate Armies spent the long dreary months of winter. When winter set in and the campaigning season came to a close, most Soldiers counted on a long, cold stay in a winter camp. Instead, it was long monotonous marches and long residency in camps punctuated by the terror and chaos of combat. From the Soldier's point of view, the American Civil War was not a continuous battle. Its fourth door is actually a separate, temperature-controlled drawer that owners report is useful for snacks, beverages, party trays, or any other items you reach for often or want to keep isolated and at a specific temperature. With 27.9 cubic feet of capacity, this model is the most spacious of our picks, but it also has the largest footprint (it’s 34.25 inches deep without its handles). If you want a fridge that offers extra customization and a little more space, the GE Profile PVD28BYNFS-a four-door French-door fridge-may appeal. The LRFLC2706S’s standard one-year warranty adds an additional five years for parts (but not labor) on compressor and cooling components. However, some users have reported the ice occasionally jams. It also has an in-door water and ice dispenser with a slimmer footprint than most. This Energy Star–certified fridge has three ice makers (one in the door, two in the freezer), and they produce four kinds of ice, including mini cubes and large spheres. (Owners report using the door-in-door feature a lot more.) The door has what LG calls InstaView-a mirrored surface that turns into a translucent window when you knock on it, so you can see a bit of what’s in the fridge without opening it. The LRYKC2606S has a door-in-door compartment, which allows you to access beverages and snacks without having to fully open the fridge. Instead of handles, the stainless steel doors have pockets, which look sleek (but could be harder for some people to use). But the interior is a little nicer, with metal trim and a sliding shelf for tall items like wine bottles. This model has slightly less capacity than our top pick (25.5 cubic feet, compared with 26.5 cubic feet). ![]() Plus it has bells and whistles that its owners really like. The LG LRYKC2606S has all of the best qualities of our top pick: It’s compact yet spacious, smart, quiet, and beloved by its owners. Our research also shows that GE Appliances has a better customer-service track record than LG. Its warranty is standard, covering the refrigerator for one year and the compressor and cooling system for five years. But you can often find it on sale for several hundred dollars less. This Energy Star–certified model doesn’t have smart features (like remote alerts or diagnostics), and it is not as quiet as our top pick. The GNE27J also has a water dispenser inside the door, but you have to use two hands to operate it (our top pick’s can be operated with one hand). The ice maker produces nearly twice as much ice as our top pick’s. It takes up more room than our top pick (mostly depth) without providing much more capacity (27 cubic feet, versus our top pick’s 26.5 cubic feet), but it has more-versatile shelving: You can fit a tall bottle or container upright, thanks to a sliding shelf. If our top pick is unavailable or you prefer a different brand, or if you just want more finish options, we recommend the solid GE GNE27J. While LG consistently ranks at the top of our surveys for customer satisfaction, our surveys also suggested that LG’s customer service isn’t as strong as that of some of its competitors. The LRFLC2706S’s standard one-year warranty adds an additional five years for parts (but not labor) on compressor and cooling components, which is rare. ![]() It has Wi-Fi–enabled smart features, so you can monitor or adjust the fridge remotely or get diagnostics if it breaks. This fridge is Energy Star–certified for efficiency, and owners report that it’s noticeably quiet. There’s also a sensor-activated water dispenser inside the LRFLC2706S’s door (you can operate it with one hand), and there’s an ice maker in the freezer. This model has a standard layout that’s user-friendly and more attractive than most. Though it doesn’t sit fully flush with counters or cabinets, it looks as if it does, thanks to its design. The well-rounded and good-looking LG LRFLC2706S offers the strongest marriage of capacity (26.5 cubic feet) and design we’ve seen for the price (it’s often around $2,000), from a company known for its reliability. * FEATURES realistic 3D graphics, an amazing original soundtrack accompanied by heavy sound effects * Customizable SCOOTERS: standard, epic and legendary with loads of gear and color combinations * Same revolutionary TWO FINGER CONTROLS as seen in Touchgrind BMX 2 We took the core of the Touchgrind brand, listened closely to OUR PLAYERS suggestions and feedback and created the most advanced and stunning Touchgrind game yet. Which is the better? Come now and advise me which of the two I shall wed. Old sire, two offers of marriage are made to me the one bride is in wealth and birth my equal the other is my superior. PittacusĪ stranger of Atarneus thus inquired of Pittacus, the son of Hyrrhadius: When choosing whom to marry, it is good to consider social status. ![]() Love features very little, although the stoics apparently believed in ‘its sole end being friendship, not bodily enjoyment’, and that ‘love depends upon regard, as Chrysippus says in his treatise Of Love, and is not sent by the gods’ (7 Zeno 130). Plato allegedly said that wise men would marry (3 Plato 78) Epicurus, on the other hand, advised them not to (10 Epicurus 119). There is plenty of advice about conventional marriage. It is also doctrine that amongst the wise there should be a community of wives with free choice of partners, as Zeno says in his Republic and Chrysippus in his treatise On Government (and not only they, but also Diogenes the Cynic and Plato). Under such circumstances we shall feel paternal affection for all the children alike, and there will be an end of the jealousies arising from adultery. Polyandry is not mentioned, and it is not clear who should have a free choice of partners: Diogenes told us a lot about philosophers’ views on marriage, including the stoics’ views on polygamy or group marriage. He said that we ought to give our daughters to their husbands maidens in years but women in wisdom thus signifying that girls need to be educated as well as boys.Īttitudes to women, then, varied, as they do today. In previous posts we met Aristippus and Plato, both of whom included women in their lists of pupils. Respect for women is also demonstrated in attitudes towards women’s education. Nay more, he never lost control of his voice.ĭiogenes’s examples of respect for women include Antisthenes, for example, who said that ‘Virtue is the same for women as for men. Polemo himself had been defendant in an action brought by his wife, who charged him with cruelty owing to the irregularities of his life but that, from the time when he began to study philosophy, he acquired such strength of character as always to maintain the same unruffled calm of demeanour. Polemo was a spendthrift and drunk until he found philosophy, which seems to have given him extraordinary power: (2 Socrates 33) Polemon, depicted as a medieval scholar Someone asked him whether he should marry or not, and received the reply, “Whichever you do you will repent it.” Sometimes misogyny is cloaked in humor, with several of the philosophers’ one-line responses being worthy of music-hall comedians. The natural rulers are the males, not only among men, but also among the other animals for the males everywhere exert wide-reaching rule over the females. The following comment is not only misogynistic, but also badly observed: Plato, as we saw in part 2, was content to include women in his school, and yet he did not see a role for them in politics. The general themes include misogyny, as explored in part 2, but he also gave examples of respectful behavior towards women, and of the humor involved in negotiating congenial relationships. He quoted from wills and letters, and also from hearsay. ![]() His anecdotes and longer exploratory writing include references to wives, daughters, slaves and courtesans. However, his writings also reveal, sometimes unintentionally, women’s roles and attitudes to women in ancient times. Diogenes Laertius’s main intention was to write biographies of male philosophers. ![]() Different types, such as inflatable, steel-frame, traditional and semi-inground pools, are available. The type of above-ground pool you choose can significantly affect the cost. Several factors can influence the overall cost, so here are five key factors that can impact the cost of your new above ground pool: Type If you’re considering getting an above ground pool, you may have wondered how much it will cost. Factors Influencing Above Ground Pool Costs Some above ground pool kits may even come with a patio included. Those on a budget can opt to purchase a small deck kit that can be put together as a DIY project for $800 to $3,000. On average, an above ground pool with a deck costs from $2,500 to $11,200, or about $15 to $30 per square foot. ![]() ![]() Decks can also make pool entry and exit easier, while also providing easier access for cleanings. They’re also durable and can last years longer than most other liners-up to 15 years total.Īdding a deck around your above ground pool can give your pool area a more put-together look and make your pool look like a more permanent feature. Expandable liners stretch to fit the size of your pool, so they are more convenient. The most expensive above ground pool liners are expandable liners costing anywhere from $200 to $700. They can be more difficult to install than overlap liners, hence their higher price. Instead, they are held in place by a component in the pool’s interior. Beaded liners line the interior of the pool and do not extend over the edge of the pool. Expect to pay between $100 and $400 for this type of pool liner that fits over the edge of the pool.īeaded pool liners are also popular choices for above ground pools with an average cost ranging from $150 to $500. Overlap liners are the least expensive (and most common) liner type because they’re easy to install. Liners are usually made of vinyl and will cost between $100 and $700, depending on how they are installed. Regardless of the wall material, all above ground pools need a liner. A basic round 12-foot pool, for example, will cost about $750 to install, while a larger, more custom oval pool can cost up to $3,000 to install. The number can change depending on the size and shape of the pool. Homeowners can expect to spend between $750 and $3,000 for above ground pool installation. Steel is often the cheapest material option for above ground pools because it can oxidize or corrode, leaving it exposed to the elements. Resin is in the middle of those two price points. Steel is typically the cheapest option, costing between $500 and $3,000 on average, while aluminum is the most expensive with an average cost between $1,000 to $4,000. Options for above ground pool frame materials include steel, resin, aluminum or a hybrid. Adding a deck to a rectangular above ground pool, for example, can bring your total cost up to $11,200. And round pool kits are often easy to find at big box stores that work to maintain budget-friendly prices.īecause they’re more difficult to install, oval and rectangular pools cost more-typically between $1,000 and $4,000, and sometimes higher with accessories. Round pools cost the least, between $750 and $3,000, because they’re easier to install. But perhaps more surprising is that a pool’s shape influences its price. In general, a pool’s price increases as its size increases and vice versa. The shape, size and material of an above ground are key in determining its total cost.
